Department

The Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering was established in 2000 as part of the University of the Aegean's Polytechnic School on the island of Syros. It is the first department of Design Engineering in Greece.

Design is a distinctive field that combines art and science, theory and practice. Design discourse thrives across online communities such as Core77 and Dexigner, as well as portals like The DieLine, Dezeen, and Co.Design. Key academic publications include Design Studies, Design Issues, and CoDesign.

Countries that build their economies on creative industries — such as the USA, UK, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Italy — are home to numerous design schools and departments, including Carnegie Mellon Design, Delft Design Engineering, KISD (Cologne International School of Design), and Politecnico di Milano School of Design. In recent years, new design schools have also emerged in countries whose economies are based on product manufacturing, such as China and India.
